From UNC to Buenos Aires: One Week Left

Preparing to Design, Create, and Connect in Buenos Aires

By Hailey Patterson

As I approach the end of my time at UNC, I’m reflecting on the incredible opportunity that awaits me this semester. I’m thrilled to be part of the Makeshift Homes team for this semester’s international project class, where I’ll have the chance to combine my skills in media, design, and storytelling. This project will allow me to take everything I’ve learned throughout my time at UNC—both as an undergrad and a graduate student—and apply it in a real-world, immersive way.

I am particularly excited about the diverse range of creative tasks I’ll be tackling as part of the interactive design team. From designing website mockups to creating interactive graphics, photography, and more, I’ll be involved in nearly every aspect of how our project comes to life online and beyond.

The opportunity to work on a project that shares the stories of people experiencing homelessness in Buenos Aires really hits home for me. It’s such a sensitive and complex issue, and I feel a deep responsibility to approach it with care and respect. I’m really passionate about using design and storytelling to create empathy and bring attention to the real struggles people face. I’m excited to be a part of something that aims to shift perspectives and foster a deeper understanding of this topic.

I’m especially excited because this trip to Buenos Aires will be so different from anything I’ve experienced before. While my last trip abroad was amazing, this time, I’ll be working on a project that’s not just about visiting a new place—it’s about diving deep into a meaningful issue and contributing to something larger than myself. The responsibility we have as a team to make this project successful makes the experience feel even more significant, and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together.

This adventure is not just about work; it’s about personal growth, too. I’m excited to expand my horizons, not just professionally but culturally. From practicing my Spanish to learning more about the history of Buenos Aires and its people, I’m eager to absorb everything I can. I know this will be a transformative experience, and I can’t wait to see how it shapes my work, my perspective, and my understanding of the world.

With just a week to go until we leave for Argentina, I’m feeling a mix of excitement and anticipation. The team has been working hard to prepare, and while there’s still plenty to finalize, I feel ready for the adventure ahead. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to experience Buenos Aires, both personally and professionally. I know this journey will be one to remember, and I’m excited to see what comes next.
