Mario Kart and a Messy Room
Advice for suitcase-packing procrastinators
By Gina Flow
With most of our team flying tomorrow, it’s finally hitting me- I’ve seriously got to pack my suitcase. I’m sure I’m not alone in this last-minute packing frenzy. I’m imagining my teammates running around the same way I am now: clothes strewn across my bed. Equipment spread out so I can triple-check I don’t leave anything behind. The only thing I have successfully packed thus far is someone else’s tripod in my checked bag. I’m trying not to panic.
I’m not the best person to give packing advice as I always rush at the last minute but here’s what I do know: Make sure to check the weather. Make sure to pack your sunscreen. Triple-check your chargers and equipment, and then maybe check again. Don’t forget your socks.
My empty suitcase seems daunting, but I have a secret weapon.
Here’s the key to finding the most efficient version of yourself: put on mario kart music. Specifically the Wii version, preferably the harder levels. Seriously, you should try it- I can’t count how many times I’ve gotten through finals season listening exclusively to mario kart music. You will never move faster in your life.
Starting this project as a graphic designer has been so fun. Sitting with the team brainstorming and going through ideations feels like we’re solving a puzzle. Each one of my teammates has so much to bring to the table, and I enjoy every second of our time together. The largest load of our design work happens back in the MEJO building, so the design team and I will mostly be helping out our fellow teammates.
The experience of coming to an island I have never been to before with a language I do not speak is both humbling and daunting. I am aware of my role as an American coming to Puerto Rico and not speaking Spanish. I would like to be as respectful and empathetic as possible during this journey, and I’m sure everyone else on my team feels the same. Overall, I’m excited to see all of our hard work coming together during this next week!
Well, I’ve really got to pack now. Wish me luck.
